Whether you’re taking a soothing yoga class or training for a marathon, the right sports bra can keep your workout comfortable. But with so many options out there, how do you find the best sports bras? We’ve broken down all the bra basics, so you’ll be supported (and look good) no matter your workout.

How Are Sports Bras Supposed to Fit?

In the past, sports bras didn’t “fit” so much as “smoosh.” Now, you don’t have to worry about constricting your chest in uncomfortable spandex undergarments. Modern sports bras are made to fit differently depending on your body type and the amount of support needed.

Though sports bras have many different features, they come in two basic types: compression and encapsulation. Compression bras don’t have individual cups and instead support the chest by lightly compressing the area (hence the not-so-creative name). Encapsulation bras do have individual cups and provide support in a way that’s similar to your everyday bra. Sports bras for higher impact activities often include both compression and encapsulation.

Whichever type you choose, make sure the fit is right. A sports bra is meant to fit a little tighter than your regular bra, but if your boobs hurt, that’s not the bra for you! If you feel chest or back pain, the bra is either letting your breasts bounce too much (no good) or squeezing them too hard (also not good).

For sports bras, go by the two-finger rule. You should be able to fit two fingers between your back and the band. You should also be able to fit two fingers between your shoulder and the strap. If your fingers won’t fit or if the band or straps are moving all over the place, it’s best to switch to a different size.

Remember, sports bras don’t last forever! The fit might be great, but after about six months, the elastic’s power will start to fade and the bra will lose support. Be sure to get new sports bras at least twice a year, more if you’re an avid exerciser.

Where to Buy Sports Bras

Sports bras used to boring and pretty basic. But more and more brands are making cool, high-fashion styles that will not only support your girls but look good while they do. One of our favorite activewear brands is Onzie. The L.A. brand uses fun patterns, on-trend colors and striking details for sports bras and leggings you’ll want to wear outside the studio.

If you prefer slick, high-performance sports bras, try Heroine Sport, which combines bold designs and technology to create street-ready gym clothes. Or you could go with Girlfriend Collective and its timeless collection of sustainable, ethically made activewear.

The Best Sports Bras for Low-Impact Activities

When there’s minimal bouncing involved in your workout, you can go for a bra made for low-impact activities. These sports bras are often more comfortable to wear as they have less compression, but they won’t offer the same support as a bra made for, say, running. If you’re taking a relaxed walk or heading to Pilates, this is the bra for you.

The Best Sports Bras for Medium-Impact Activities

Medium-impact activities are things like hiking, weight training and Spinning. Sports bras made for these types of exercise typically have slightly wider straps and bands to give a higher level of support without sacrificing comfort. Medium-impact bras also usually feature moisture-wicking fabric (since your workout is probably making your sweat), so you don’t have to worry about chafing or overheating.

If you have a smaller cup size, these sports bras will get you through a boot-camp class or light jog, while women with a larger bust should use them for hiking or hitting the dumbells.

The Best Sports Bras for High-Impact Activities

If you’re doing anything that requires running or jumping, you need a high-impact bra. Jumping jacks, burpees, squat jumps — these all cause a lot of boob movement, and if you don’t have support, you can wind up in pain after your workout.

Whether you’re practicing for a 5K or doing HIIT training, make sure your bra has a wide band, supportive straps and moisture-wicking fabric so your boobs stay happy during these intense workouts.
