Fall is the season for men’s fashion. The weather is cool enough to rock layers, dapper footwear, and wintry accessories, but not too cold that everything ends up buried under a big parka.

It’s the perfect time to experiment with new fits and styles, but before you go looking for statement pieces, accessories and flashy outerwear, stock up on the basics first. To help you build a strong fall fashion foundation, we rounded up the fall essentials every man should have in his wardrobe.

1. Sweatshirt

When the temperature drops and the vibes skew laid-back, a well-fitted pullover sweatshirt or hoodie is a man’s best friend. And no, we’re not talking about the ones you used to rock in high school — these you can (and should) wear indoors and out. Grab them in light and dark colorways for a casual outerwear option no matter the mood.

2. Dark Jeans

When it comes to shopping for men’s fall essentials, a good pair of dark jeans should be at the top of your list. They go with just about anything and transition effortlessly from day to night. Wear them to the office, to the bar or to that pumpkin-picking trip you’ve been looking forward to all year. Find one that fits and you’ll never want to take them off. Nor will you have to. That’s the good thing about dark denim.

3. Fitted Beanie

Whether you’re actually keeping your ears warm or just going for that fly fisherman look, there’s arguably no cooler way of covering your cranium than with a fitted beanie. Cop one in black, gray or blue for serious versatility — or in a brighter color like yellow to add a Wes Anderson-inspired pop to your other fall essentials.

4. Dark Tee

T-shirt weather may be on its way out, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stock up on this men’s wardrobe essential. Black and gray tops are great neutral complements to classic fall colors like mustard, burgundy and olive green. Layer them with a windbreaker, a leather jacket or a work shirt for those days when you’re not quite sure what season it is.

5. Cool Socks

If you aren’t wearing cuffed pants yet, make fall the season to start. They don’t just lengthen your legs — they also create an opportunity to show off some serious sock game. After all, sporting a fun pair (nautical or varsity inspired, acid wash or color block) can add a playful touch to any outfit. Go ahead, flash a lil’ ankle.

6. Corduroy Jacket

A corduroy jacket is an easy way to add the trending fabric to your fall wardrobe. Throw it over a shirt and jeans for an effortlessly stylish way to stay cool or play it up with some prints or even corduroy pants for a bold, vintage look. Think of it like the linen of fall: You’ll want to wear it as much as you can before the season’s over.

7. Plaid Shirt

This quintessential autumn shirt isn’t just for lumberjacks. Yes, you’ll wear it on hiking trips, but also to the grocery store, on bike rides around the city and out to the bar with friends. When it’s well-worn and comfortable, it’s the ultimate fall wardrobe essential.

8. Statement Sweater

If most of your cool-season closet skews dark and neutral, you’ll want to pick up a solid statement sweater to help you stand out in the crowd. Think Christmas sweater minus the kitsch. Look for one with a cool pattern or satisfying color scheme and pair with jeans or cords for an easy, eye-catching autumn look.
