As much as we dread the end of summer, we love that moment when the weather turns crisp and we can finally break out our fall fashion haul. And there’s a lot to be excited about this season. Retro trends like big shoulders and power suits are making a comeback, as are classic patterns like plaid and python. And it doesn’t look like summer’s silk skirts or puffy sleeves are going anywhere anytime soon, though they are getting a fresh autumn upgrade.

To help you decide which fall 2019 fashion trends are most worth your time (and money), we’ve pulled together the styles we’re most looking forward to wearing.

1. Silk Maxi Skirts

Maxi skirts are the new midi skirts. For full Stevie Nicks/witch vibes, try this Anthony Thomas Mellilo piece. The asymmetric seams elevate the classic closet staple, while the luxe silk fabric keeps things on trend. With a banded waist and slight A-line cut, the skirt is super comfortable and pairs with just about anything.

2. Statement Shoulders

Get ready to live out your Melanie-Griffith-in-Working-Girl fantasies because big shoulders are back. The 2019 version of the trend is a little softer — but still has a strong, bold feel. If you want to go full ‘80s boss lady (in the best possible way), try this ASTR the Label Mini Dress. The jacket-dress will accent your waist and give you a distinct silhouette.

3. Houndstooth and Plaid

Houndstooth and plaid pretty much never go out of style, but the versatile prints are especially big this season, showing up on mules to jumpsuits to trench coats. Because the patterns are inherently classic, the fall fashion trend is a great one to wear to work. Throw this menswear-inspired Manhattan Blazer over a black turtleneck for a Jobsian uniform you’ll wear all autumn.

This season’s puffy shirts and dresses are a far cry from the Renaissance fair or pirate pieces that probably come to mind. An autumn crop top might sound like an oxymoron, but we love the way this C/MEO Collective blouse balances out its voluminous sleeves with a cropped cut — and the mustard color and on-trend print make it the perfect fall piece.

5. Satin Everything

Satin everything is in, be it a blouse, skirt, trouser or shoe. To really celebrate this glamorous fabric, try this satin bodysuit. Yes, bodysuit, and it’s just as cool as it sounds. The drapey shape and flattering V-neck made this perfect for work, a night out or an extra-chic trip to the grocery store. Plus, you never have to worry about the hem riding up or a bulky blouse coming untucked.

6. Power Suits

Take the word “pantsuit” out of your vocabulary and welcome “power suit” in its place. This season’s suits are nothing like the sad pieces from the ‘90s. These are strong, sexy and, dare we say, badass. C/MEO Collective’s double-breasted jumpsuit is a two-piece suit all in one, making it perhaps the easiest way to wear the fall 2019 fashion trend.

When it comes to animal prints, leopard print usually gets all the glory, but snakeskin and python are taking hold this fall. And for good reason: They’re edgy enough to make a statement but neutral enough to feel timeless. This silk shirt is a perfect example of that. The python-print button-down can be worn on a weekend coffee date or under a blazer to your nine-to-five.
