Walking back-to-back shows during New York Fashion Week can inevitably take a toll on anyone’s skin. But like anything in life, the secret lies in proper skin care to save your face from becoming a canvas of irritation and dryness. To find out exactly how models prep their skin pre-show, our senior beauty buyer joined celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas and her team backstage at Rebecca Minkoff. Behind the scenes, we learned which four namesake essentials the mini facial called for — so you can re-create it at home ahead of your next event.

But first, the dos and don’t of event skin prep:

Do: Drink plenty of water leading up to the occasion.

Don’t: Pop any pimples. Instead, treat them with microcurrents or a topical.

Do: Use skincare products in between makeup looks. Applying makeup immediately after removing your first look is much too harsh on your skin.

Don’t: Get abrasive peels or exfoliations. Opt for a gentle treatment if you get a facial before an event.

How to Re-Create the Mini Facial

  • Step 1: Ideal for all skin types, the Vitamin C Face Wash really exfoliates while it cleans. Leave it on for a couple of minutes for deeper exfoliation.
  • Step 2: If you have a blemish, apply a thin layer of the Exfoliating Mask on cleansed and dampened skin. Scrub gently for one minute and then leave on the spot overnight (or for as long as possible), then wash with tepid water.
  • Step 3: Joanna Vargas’ Glow-to-Go Mask Set is incredible to address specific needs. Also, each packet in this travel-friendly set contains extra serum; use it on your décolleté, arms, legs, or anywhere you can use an extra boost of hydration.
  • Step 4: Finally, seal it all in with the Daily Serum. You can apply it all the way up to the eyes for a depuffing effect.
